Abstract

The main objetive of this research was to estimate a CobbDouglas type production function in order to verify the resource allccation of dairy cattle enterprise in the South of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Partieu 1ar ly , it was interested in the use of qualitative variables like schooling and age of the enterpreneur and their effect in the production function. It was studied 267 questionnaires devided into four ífferent sizes according to the number of produetives cows. A production function was fitted for every size of farm and a gene ai production function for the agregate. The Chow test was utilized in order to verify possible ifferences among farms. It was concluded that farms are not ifferent regardeless the number of produetive cows. The fitted model explained 66.8% of the total variation production (R2). The variable age of the entrepreneur was significant statistica 1ly , however its inclusion in the model did not affect the value of the coefficient of de termination (R2) . It was negatively correlated with the productivity allowing to conclude that factor such as risk aversion, propensity to consume j>vercame the effect of "learning by doing". Scholing affects positively the productivity indicating tfhat investiments in education of the landowner would allow an ncrease in the productivity of the dary cattle enterprise. In order to study the allocative effect of the resources nother production function was fitted concluding that food ejxpenditure and labor are being used above the efficient levei, while silage and productive cows need to be increased.
