Abstract: In order to contribute to the development of new methods for controlling plant-parasitic nematodes, the present work aimed to study the effect of volatile organic substances (VOSs) on the population of Meloidogyne incognita in soybean and cotton plants. The leaves of seedlings of cultivars susceptible to nematodes were sprayed with VOSs combinations and their roots were inoculated with second stage juveniles of M. incognita. After 30 (cotton) or 45 days (soybean), the number of galls was smaller on those soybean plants treated with combinations of jasmone + methyl jasmonate (treatment 1), (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol + (E)-hex-3-en-1-ol + (Z)- hex-2-en-1-ol + (E)-hex-2-enal + hexan-1-ol (treatment 2) and meso-butane-2,3-diol + butane-1,2-diol + butane- 1,3-diol + butane-1,4-diol (treatment 4), but these VOSs did not affect the number of eggs. In cotton plants, the treatments 1, 2 and 5 (3-hydroxybutan-2-one + 4-hydroxybutan-2-one) increased the number of galls in the roots. The substances of the treatments 1, 2 and 4 are potentially useful for the control of nematodes in soybean plants. Consequently, further studies will be carried out to better evaluate this potential.
