Abstract: Even though Edwin Hubble has not endorsed in public the expansion of the universe, nowadays he is known mainly for having discovered the expansion of the universe. In this paper we review the history of the “HUbble Law”, aiming more than to make justice and give credit to other candidates for this discovery, such as Lemaˆıtre, Lundmark, Silberstein and de Sitter, but in fact to show that discoveries in science are often an extended process, with many collaborators and hardly can be assigned to a single individual scientist in a specific time. This has several pedagogical implications regarding the use of history of science in order to promote more critical views about science in basic education, like discussions about the concept of discovery and priority disputes on physics.
