The experiment was conducted in the Departments of Biology and Animal Science of the Federal University of Lavras from August of 2005 to December of 2006 with the objective of studying different biologic treatments on cotton textile mill waste for ruminantt feeding. At first, different formulations of substrates containing the waste for production of the mushrooms Agaricus blazei and Pleurotus sajor-caju (biologic treataments) were evalaluated. In the production of Pleurotus in the axenic process, the substrate containing 80% of waste and 20% of wheat meal was the one which showed highest yield and biologic efficiency. While in the production of A.blazei, the substrates containing 30% of waste, 60% of coastcross hay and 10% of wheat meal and containing 45% of waste, 45% of coastcross hay and 10% of wheat meal presented acceaptable yields for the commercial cultivation in Brazil, but lower to the standard substrate with 45% of sugar bagasse, 45% of coastcross hay and 10% of wheat meal. After evaluating the potential of the waste in the production of mushrooms, those treatments (substrates) which presented the best results in the cultivation were chosen to be submitted to degradability and digestibility trials. In the degradability trial, three cows with fistulas in the rumen were utilized and the treatments were incubated in times 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The degradabilities of DM, CP and NDF were evaluated. Among the treatmens evaluated, the exhausted ones (substrate after mushroom production) containing 80% of waste and 20% of wheat meal in the cultivation of Pleurotus sajor-caju in axenic process and the treatments containing 30% of waste, 60% of coastcross hay and 10 % of wheat meal and containing 45% of waste, 45% of coastcross hay and 10% of wheat meal in the cultivation of Agaricus blazei in a fermented process stood out. Under the conditions which the experiements were conducted, those fungi were efficient in increasing the degradability of DM, CP and NDF and in aggregating N in these exhausted mushrooms. In the digestibility trial, the addition of the exhausted ones of Agaricus blazei containing 45% of waste, 45% of coastcross hay and 10% of wheat meal (waste meal) in the sheep diets was evaluated. Five ewes of the Santa Ines breed averaging 23.20 Kg were utilized. The diets were balanced according to the AFRC (1993) system, containing 50% of coast-cross hay and 50% of concentrate to supply the requirement of 49.25g of metabolizable protein and 8.68 MJ of metabolizable energy. The treatments consisted in replacing 10, 20, 30 and 40 % of the hay of the standard diet by the waste which was mixed in the concentrate. The addition of waste meal afforded greater intakes of DM, CP and NDF of the concentrate and daily total. The addition of waste meal into the diets did not alter the digestibility of NDF, but provided poorer digestibility of DM and CP from the addition of 6.66% and 15.83% of waste meal, respectively, these percentages of additon providing the highest values of digestibility of DM and CP of the diets. Use of cotton waste after mushroom production has the potential to be utilized in ruminant feeding, but it needs further studies, mainly relative to ruminal fermentation and profile of produced fatty acids.pt_BR
