Resumo: The critical velocity is an indirect method of easy application to estimate the anaerobic threshold. The purpose of this study, was to investigate the possibility of identifying the Individual anaerobic threshold through a progressive test of 100 meters’s seven shots, and identify the correlation between the threshold’s time obtained in the progressive test, and the threshold’s time obtained through critical velocity, determined by maximal efforts of 100 and 200 meters in swimmers swimming through their best stroke. This study included 17 young swimmers of state/national level. To calculate the critical velocity, the athletes swam distances of 100 and 200 meters as fast as possible. The critical velocity was determined by the slope (b) of the linear regression line between the distances and the respective periods. To calculate the individual anaerobic threshold, it was performed 100 meter’s of seven shots. The results showed that it was possible to identify the threshold velocity through the progressive test. The average swimming founded it was 1.1 (m/s) by individual anaerobic threshold and 1.08 (m/s) by critical velocity. We founded a significative correlation between the occurred swimming velocity by two methods (pearson = 0.8098; p ≤ 0.05). It’s necessary more studies in which compare differents methods with critical velocity and individual anaerobic threshold for training and physical exercise.
