Resumo: Canine parvovirus is an infectious disease with high rates of morbidity and mortality. It mainly affects dogs under six months of age and causes hemorrhagic enteritis. When appropriate treatment is established after diagnosis, there is a greater chance of survival. Thus, an early assessment of the prognosis can lead to better management of this disease. Currently, there is no effective and rapid prognostic test to determine the severity of the disease when the patient is admitted to the clinic and during treatment. Therefore, the focus of this dissertation consists of a literature review on canine parvovirus disease and a case-control study to determine clinical and hematological factors associated with the unfavorable prognosis of canine disease. Data from the epidemiological survey were collected from patients who arrived at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Lavras (HV-UFLA), Brazil. Twenty-six dogs were included in the analyzes, as they are dogs with symptoms and positive for parvovirus canine, without chromatographic immunoassay or polymerase chain reaction, which are returned for reassessment or death by canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess risk factors for poor prognosis in dogs infected with CPV-2. From the literature review, it was possible to detect the need to determine the prognosis of dogs infected with CPV. In the case-control study, a canine parvovirus disease, a Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), can be considered a risk factor for an unfavorable prognosis. This study demonstrated that patients with SIRS were 12.96 times more likely to have an unfavorable prognosis for canine parvovirus (CI 1.47 - 195.19; p <0.01). It can be concluded that the presence of SIRS at the admission of a patient to the veterinary clinic increases the probability of an unfavorable prognosis for dogs infected by CPV-2.
