Resumo: In Brazil, Decree 5626/2005 regulated the access of deaf people to education and guaranteed the presence of interpreters of Brazilian sign language (Libras) in schools, However, teachers are responsible for the achievement of teaching targets. This study aims to identify the training needs and challenges faced by teachers who teach deaf students in the regular education system. To achieve this aim, we analyzed data obtained through a questionnaire applied to 29 active teachers working with deaf students in a school in the state of Minas Gerais. The results showed that among the training needs, specific training to attend deaf students is required. Regarding the challenges faced by these teachers, we could observe: linguistic difference, communication difficulties, dependence on the interpreter, and the use of appropriate teaching strategies. Our results highlighted the importance of implementing public policies for continuous education for a better understanding of the specificities of these students, with an emphasis on more adequate teaching practices that cater for deaf students’ needs.
