Resumo: The tendon injuries therapy is recognized as a challenge in human and veterinary medicine, partly due to difficulty of completely restoration the tendon morphology and its biomechanical strength. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used successfully in the therapy of tendonitis, however, there are still divergent data regarding its effectiveness and the complete mechanism of its action is still unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of PRP in initial wound repair of induced lesion in the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT). Partial tenotomy of the palmar SDFT was conducted with the aid of a dermatological punch in 10 male sheep and immediate intra-tendon therapy was instituted with 200μL of autologous PRP in the treated group (TG) and 200μL of 0.9% sodium chloride in the control group (CG). Clinical, thermographic and ultrasound evaluation were performed for 30 days after therapy. There were no changes in clinical assessment between experimental groups. In the thermographic evaluation, an increase in temperature was observed on the surface of the tendon lesion in the CG compared to the TG, 30 days after the therapy. In ultrassonographic evaluation, less edema in the TG compared to CG at moments 01, 02, 10 and 30 days after therapy. These findings suggest modulation of the inflammatory process in response to PRP therapy in the initial phase of tendon repair.
