Abstract: Knowledge of the reproduction of the species of freshwater fish with potential for aquaculture biology is key when you want to perform the intensive rearing of these species. Climate change is becoming evident each year and exert strong influences on aquatic organisms trying to adapt to these changes affecting their reproductive performance. The aim of this study is to describe the reproductive characteristics in teleost fish with high potential for aquaculture. The basic mechanisms of neuroendocrine control of reproduction of fish are addressed and their influence by environmental and genetic factors. The characteristic reproductive cycle of the species with potential for breeding and involved physiological events that affect the reproductive behavior are also discussed. A morphological description of the ovaries and testes that allows a correlation with the maturation in most studied species is made. Other reproductive characteristics as spawning, fecundity, sex ratio and parental care that play an important role in the kind of productivity are described in this study. Knowledge of the reproductive biology of the species with potential for aquaculture is of great importance for the establishment of breeding strategies and application of biotechnology that may contribute to the increase in fish production.
