Abstract: | Sepsis is defined as the systemic inflammatory response triggered by a bacterial, viral, fungal or protozoal presence of associated with systemic repercussions signals, and organ dysfunction is known as severe sepsis. The sepsis effects on the cardiovascular system are predominant. It is being a clinical picture of myocardial depression, one of the main causes of death in dogs with pyometra. the aim of this study was to evaluate troponin I as a biomarker of cardiac injury in sepsis, and other hematological parameters in female dogs with pyometra. A prospective study was conducted on December 2013 to April 2015, at University Federal of Lavras, Minas Gerais. Nineteen dogs diagnosed with pyometra and 10 healthy dogs. The groups did not differ in the assessment of serum cardiac troponin I. The total number of leukocytes (mm3) and the percentage of rods was significantly higher in the sepsis group (23.221,74 ± 16.848,80 mm 3 e 5,91 ± 10,18 %) compared to no sepsis group (14.492,86 ± 6.828,26 mm 3 e 1,93 ± 1,64 %) and control group (10.320,00 ± 3.999,02 mm 3 e 1,65 ± 2,05 %). The most significant elevations in serum concentrations of alkaline phosphatase enzyme were observed in sepsis group (347,72 ± 300,18 U/L) compared to no sepsis group and control group respectively (174,71 ± 150,93 e 110,32 ± 41,25). There were significant differences in serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (mg / dL) in sepsis group (19,57 ± 41,69 md/dL compared compared to no sepsis group (10,29 ± 12,02 mg/dL) and control group (3,60 ± 3,53 mg/dL). In the evaluation of serum lactate concentration, there were significant difference between dogs with pyometra and healthy dogs, but there were no significant difference between the groups and no sepsis sepsis. The results of this study indicate that troponin I could not be considered an early biomarker for myocardial injury in cases of dog with pyometra, because the results of the measurements were similar between groups, inferring that may not have occurred injury of cardiomyocytes this stage. Furthermore C-reactive protein and lactate are markers for potential systemic inflammation, as demonstrated significantly higher serum concentrations in dogs with pyometra. |
