Abstract: This paper aims to discuss how the irony is constituted as a stylistic strategy in the newspaper and how that style builds and confirms stereotypes of women. We hypothesized that there are conceptual metaphors in the journalistic discourse, revealing and build stereotypes of women, guiding the selection of stylistic resources as a strategy to involve the reader. In order to achieve our purpose, we adopted theoretical concept of irony proposed by Maingueneau (2005), the concept of stereotype, discussed by Lippman (1970), Amossy (2005) and Charaudeau (2007) and the conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (2002). The corpus of analyses is constituted by texts taken from the newspaper Expresso Popular, the month of March 2009 and analyzed them. According to the analysis, we found that the irony is the most stylistic trait present in the material in the representation of women. Furthermore, through irony, constitutes the exaggeration that characterizes the level of sensationalism in popular newspaper.
