Abstract: This article uses the Patrimonialist State of Estates, described by Faoro as a metaphor to the family business comprehension. The analyses are based on the theoretical review on the two objects of study. As a result, three categories are identified: lack of middlemen and centralized administration, indistinctness between public and private and personalist relations. Finally, one can conclude that Patrimonialist State of Estates is a valid metaphor to the family business dynamics comprehension. These organizational types have a peculiar management, grouping, in a single system, economic values resulting from the business logic, and affective values, characteristic of the family structure
