Abstract: Technological characterization and correct identification of wood species are fundamental for better adaptation of its use by industry and control of illegal trade. In order to analyze whether the commercial names given refer to the identified taxa, the present study aimed to identify macroscopically the main logging species commercialized in the Lavras-Minas Geraismicroregion, observing and describing the anatomical peculiarities that differentiate each one of the collected species, in order to elaborate a dichotomous key applicable to the region. The collections were made in wood mills in the Lavras/MG microregion and later identified. After that, two samples were prepared for each plank collected, one being used to confirm the identification and another for the macroscopic anatomical characterization. The observations and descriptions of the anatomical peculiarities of the wood were made according to the Standard of Procedures in Studies of Wood Anatomy idealized by IBAMA. According to the results, the trade names were in agreement with the literature, except for the taxa Goupiaglabra and Pouteria sp., the common names used in Lavras region must be replaced by the names more indicated for these that are cupiúba and abiu respectively. Among the many peculiarities that wood presented, the arrangement of the axial parenchyma was the main character used in the distinction of tropical species. It is concluded that wood anatomy is a method capable of segregating and/or identifying timber species, being fundamental for the control of trade, recommending also the use of botanical nomenclature to avoid fraud in this activity.
