Resumo: Aspects relating to the protection of intellectual property represent issues of central interest in the dynamics of innovation systems. Nevertheless, in Brazil, its articulation with the framework of STI policy presents an incipient character, creating problems that are particularly felt at the state level. This article addresses the structure of the intellectual property system in the state of Minas Gerais through an evaluation of relevant documents and bibliographies. Results show that only in 2012, with the release of the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation, the intellectual property policy was inserted in the scope of two of the 17 strategies of this action plan (within the pillar “promotion of innovation”). This represented a breakthrough for the country, since ICTs represent the main R&D performers in the country, in an embryonic context of university-business interaction. It was also highlighted the pivotal role of the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG) in the development of an intellectual property policy. Still, it is expected that the new national strategy reflects the recent legislation (Law No. 13.243/2016), and that the issue of intellectual property continue in its role as a strategic axis of innovation policy.
