Abstract: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the contents of phenols syringaldehyde (Sg) and vanillin (V), derived from lignin and syringyl / guaiacyl ratio (S/G) with the wood and charcoal characteristics, as well as the mass loss in the process of pyrolysis. The experiment was obtained with seven Eucalyptus taxa, and the data evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. There were statistically significant correlations of the vanillin and syringaldehyde contents, and S / G ratio with the characteristics of the wood, charcoal and with the mass loss during pyrolysis process. Both the vanillin as the syringaldehyde contents showed a significant correlation with the gravimetric yield of carbonization. The sample with the highest amount of vanillin showed less weight loss between 315-390ºC (48.10%) resulting in higher residual mass at 450°C (22.40%). The correlation between the vanillin content and the weight loss at this temperature range shows the potential of guaiacyl lignin structures to elevate the gravimetric yield of charcoal.
