Abstract: The recovery of the vegetation around the springs is important for maintaining the quality and quantity of water. In cases where the springs are disturbed, it is necessary to the restoration of the ecosystem. In such cases, it is essential to develop diagnosis. For this reason, it was constructed a model as objective of realize the characterization of the conditions of the springs and their around. The main goal of the study were to develop a model for characterization of springs and test it in order to characterize these areas concerne to their condition. 51 springs were evaluated as to the land use, condition of riparian vegetation and state of conservation of soil and water appearance. The results showed that 52.94% of the springs were classified as degraded, 45.10% as very disturbed and 3.90% as slightly disturbed. No area was classified as preserved. The model developed and evaluated showed easy to use and can be used as a tool to guide the development of technologies focused on recovery and protection of springs. However, the model provides a basic overview on the state of conservation of the area and other diagnostic techniques can be employed.
