Abstract: In recent decades, the biotechnology has been considered the area with greater technological perspective in the solution of several problems of society, including in the agricultural sector. The aim of this article is to promote a critical analysis of what happened in the last 30 years of employment of biotechnology techniques. The advance in basic knowledge was enormous. However, the application of new technologies aimed at obtaining new cultivars that provide the increase in yield of crops is still restricted, especially, in terms of the realized investment. In the future, certainly there will be need for greater integration between the breeders and biotechnologists to obtain more efficient cultivars that pre-existing in less time than currently occurs.
