Abstract: This essay aims to analize biogas’ using energy generated by municipal waste and sanitary sewers consulting estimates of biogas’ generation in the city of São Luís (MA), aiming to know the potential of energy using provided for betterment of sanitary liquids’ treatments from Sewage Disposals and Municipal Waste Treatment Units. The methodology was based upon literature related to this matter, population and quantitative studies and municipal waste and sanitary sewers’ destinations. Calculation methods were used, which resulted on the estimation of the quantity of methane generated by the quantity of home municipal waste and by the quantity of sewage produced by São Luís’ (MA) population, where the main used parameters were: rate of municipal waste generation; fraction of municipal waste destined to landfill; methane’s generation’s potential and specific mass; rate of generation of oxygen’s biochemical demand; fraction of treated sewage; and methane’s low calorific value. Upon that context, this essay has concluded that methane’s generation estimate in São Luís is of 6.7 tons a year with an energy using available of 16 thousand megawatts a year. This situation justifies using the energy from biogas for the betterment of sanitary sewers because it represents economic and environmental gain by using methane from anaerobic processes.
