Abstract: The myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) is the main heart diseases that affect dogs, which were almost all adults and old ones, from small to medium size and with a predisposition in males and in some breeds. It is a chronic progressive disease that has no cure, so, the treatments exist to provide a survival to the affected animal. The changes that occur in this disease make the mitral valve surfaces increasingly thicker and irregular, causing a poor coaptation of its free leaflets and, consequently, mitral regurgitation, and some animals can present signs of heart failure. The Doppler echocardiography is considered the most important non-invasive tool for MMVD diagnosis, which are obtained important information with qualitative and quantitative character about the cardiovascular system. This review aims to make an update on the literature information regarding MMVD, as well as, highlight its new classification and therapeutics of the disease.
