Abstract: The electrical activity of the heart is commonly measured using the electrocardiogram (ECG). Since some transient arrhythmias are not detected in the ECG, this procedure should be complemented with ambulatory ECG recording (Holter), which continuously monitors the cardiac activity for at least 24 hours. Holter monitoring yields detailed data about the heart rhythm, assessing and delivering qualitative and quantitative information about abnormal cardiac complexes and heart rate variability and thereby resulting in greater diagnosis reliability. This review aims to describe the application technique and clinical indications of Holter analysis of heart rate variability to evaluate the autonomic control of the heart.
