Abstract: This article presents blended education as a historical trend in Brazil and Portugal. The analysis is based on two main researches: the doctoral thesis of the first author, which deals with the process of institutionalization of Brazilian public Distance Education (DE); and the sandwich doctorate period also carried out by the first author within the scope of the Open University of Portugal (UAb). As a result, we propose blended education as a historical trend in the two countries analyzed. Our contribution to the theme concerns, above all, the use of dialectics as a conceptual instrument for the analysis of the phenomenon. Therefore, as the main result, we defend that the historical-social conditions, together with the movementof greater understanding of the subjects in the face of what surrounds them, tends to culminate in more hybrid scenarios in which the still persistent dichotomies between distance education and face-to-face education are overcome.
