Resumo: Urban forestry provides numerous ecosystem services that contribute to a better quality of life for the population. Cities must have public policies aimedat the management of afforestation in cities. The Master Plan or Municipal Plan for Urban Forestry (PDAU/PMAU) is an instrument that enables assertive actions on the planning and maintenance of trees. The objective of this work was to analyze the elaboration of the PDAU of Goiânia and the PMAU of São Paulo, carrying out a theoretical and interpretative study with the intention of discussing laws and characterization of urban forestry plans in Brazil. The research is qualitative, with data obtained through documentary research and the methodology used was Content Analysis, with 7 categories defined a priori. The results showed that both plans were prepared with the participation of qualified professionals with multidisciplinary training. The São Paulo inventory made through the forest census made it possible to know in more detail the situation of urban forestry in the city. The participation of the population in the elaboration of the plan took place more comprehensively in the PMAU of São Paulo, however, it represents only 0.05% of the total number of residents. The targets for executing the Plan were: 10 to 20 years in Goiânia without a specific period for revision; 20 years in São Paulo, with a proposed revision every 5 years or according to the needs of the municipality. It is important to have specific federal legislation to regulate the planning, implementation and maintenance of urban trees.
