Abstract: Managers of Federal University Hospitals have been facing challenges in order to offer quality service to patients and excellence teaching to students. Given the exposed, we aimed at analyzing academic production on the management of public university hospitals, identifying the bibliometric traits and comparing the main results and themes approached at the academy with the theories on New Public Management. In order to do this, we used the systematic bibliographic review. We selected 90 articles published between the years of 1995 and 2014 from within the Web of Science (ISI Web of Knowledge), Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and SciVerse Scopus databases. The results are discussed in two subsections: i) bibliometric survey and ii) comparison of the university hospital traits identified in literature with discussions on New Public Management. We concluded that Federal University Hospitals face many challenges such as human resource management and teaching learning relation. In addition, this work allowed us to view the criticisms and theorizations of the New Public Management over the difficulties and strategies of hospital management identified in literature.
