Resumo: This study aimed to define the management that provides the balance of the intercropping between legume and grass without affecting pasture´s productivity. Two experiments were conducted at the Federal University of Lavras (21 14'S 45 ° 00'W), Brazil. The first experimental period was from March 2012 to August 2014 and the second from September 2013 to August 2014. The experimental area was 360 m 2 , which was divided into 16 plots. The canopy of the first experiment was maintained at 10, 20, 30 and 40 cm CH, through weekly cuts in each of the 10 stations. In the second experiment, the treatments consisted of defoliation intervals (DI) of 14, 28, 42 and 84 d. The experiments were established in completely randomized blocks with four replications. For statistical analysis was used the proc mixed procedure of SAS. The canopies of greater intensity of defoliation (CH10 and CH20), resulted in an increase in stolon’s density, whereas canopies with less severe defoliation (CH30 and CH40) had in an increase in the number of tillers. The canopies with higher frequencies of defoliation (DI14 and DI28) showed greater stolons density. Lower frequencies of defoliation (DI42 and DI84) promoted more number of tillers. The ratio of grass and legume that did not affect pasture productivity was that ones canopies CH20 and DI14.
