Resumo: The objectives of this work were to account for the energy necessary to implement a chicken rearing Darkhouse installation and evaluate the energetic balance of a poultry farm in production, with this type of installations. A total of 9,931,775.26 MJ, with a specific energy coefficient of 3,678.43 MJ for each square meter of this type of installation, were expended. The material to demand the most energy for the construction process was wood, representing 72.16% of the total, followed by steel and cement, with 2.95 and 2.57%, respectively. Few studies regarding the energy imbedded in materials and constructions for animal rearing were found, especially when concerning a system recently inserted into the Brazilian scenery. Thus, the present study aims at incrementing literature related to energy analyses. The sustainability of a commercial poultry farm was evaluated by energetic analysis, consisting of an intensive broiler chicken rearing system with Darkhouse installations present in the region. Studies on energy flow, energy output and input within the system frontier, energy efficiency and amount of energy necessary for producing one kilogram of live chicken were performed. The total energy that enters the system was of 7,420,351.91 MJ, and that exits the system was of 7,076,056.00 MJ, while the energy balance was -344,295.91 MJ, the activity shows like an agroindustrial system, an energy importer. Energy efficiency was 0.95 and the energy required to produce 1 kg of live chicken was 37.55 MJ kg-1.
