Abstract: The use of constructive structural materials requires a deep knowledge of its characteristics, as well as methods of evaluating its physical and mechanical properties, for its better performance. Thus, it becomes important the search for methodologies of tests capable of describing the behavior of the materials. The objective of this study was to apply the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique and verify its potential as a tool for measuring deformation and characterization of the materials. The non-destructive technique of PIV tests has the advantage of indirect measurement of deformations, with the possibility of field application and of not causing damage to the material. The PIV technique was applied to sawed wood of Pinus oocarpa, and Eucalyptus grandis, plywood panels, LVL (Laminated veneer lumber) and OSB (Oriented strand board) in static bending test. It has been found through comparison to a conventional test method that the PIV technique was able to measure the displacements occurred in the static bending tests in different regions of the samples. By applying the Student's ttest with 1% confidence, it was verified that some values of deformation were equal in the two applied techniques and the measurements that did not present statistical equality, obtained a correction equation (y = ax + b ) with values of "a" close to 1 (highest value of a = 0.874) and values of “b” close to 0 (highest value of a = 0.094). Regarding the characterization of the materials, the values of modulus of elasticity found by the PIV technique were statistically the same as those found by the conventional methodology in all types of materials tested. It was concluded with the present study that the PIV technique is an accurate and reliable tool for measuring displacements in load-bearing parts and is also capable of characterizing different materials, with precision similar to the techniques traditionally used.
