Resumo: Using two microscopy techniques, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and of epifluorescence, the present study analyzed the degeneration process caused by endogenia, especially under inanition situation. Two concentric UASB reactors, working in series and designed for pilot scale systems, treating wastewater from wet process of coffee fruits, were monitored as regard to the parameters physical, chemical and microbiological. The UASB reactors functioned in the field, and the atmospheric temperature oscillated from 16.5 to 38.8°C, and the affluent and effluent liquid temperature varied between 16.3 and 27.3°C, respectively. The initial data obtained for chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 1349 and 1173 mg L-1, and at the end of monitoring process the observed values for the same parameter were 120 and 102 mg L-1 for the reactor 1 and 2, respectively. The microscopy analysis applied to the solids profile of the reactors shown to be fundamental and must be applied as a quality parameter of the cultivated sludge, in order to observe its quality along the reactors profile mainly due to its decay.
