Abstract: The objective of this work is to identify, in the opinion of students, to what extent the practices of bachelor courses in business are aligned to the demanded competencies by the current knowledge society. From the studies on the development of competencies in the academic environment, this study investigated the development of general competences described by Sant’Anna (2002) and DeSeCo Project (Definition and Selection of Key Competencies), and also the development of specific competencies to the training of the administrator, described by the Tuning Project - Latin America and the national curriculum guidelines of bachelor’s degree in business courses. The research started up from a quantitative approach, using descriptive and multivariate statistical techniques, and field research, characterized as descriptive and comparative, since it sought to describe relationships between demographic variables and predictors, beyond compare the development of competencies among the respondents from public and private institutions. The technique used was the survey, which covered 376 senior students of bachelor courses in business in six higher education institutions (public and private) of Minas Gerais State. Among the main results, we found out that social competencies have been the group of competencies more developed in the training of administrator. On the other hand, the competencies of scientific research and the competencies of entrepreneurial have been the less developed competencies, resulting in the need for new academic practices that are able to favor their development. Among the specific competencies, we identified that human competencies represent the group of competencies that are more developed in the training of administrator. On the other hand, the legal-technological competencies represent the competencies that are less developed, especially with regard to the ability to manage information systems and the knowledge of the legal framework applied to the management. It was also identified significant differences in the perceptions of the development of general and specific competencies among students of public and private institutions, indicating different training profiles. The results allow us to conclude that the practices highlighted in the business courses have not followed the demands for the general and specific competencies evidenced in the literature, emerging new insights for improvements in the training of administrators prepared for the various economic and social demands.
