Abstract: The decrease in the offer of valuable native species wood supply, due to several restrictions, fostered the investigation of alternative species, such as the Australian Cedar (Toona ciliata M. Roem.). The objective of this work was to determine and evaluate the basic density of the Australian Cedar wood in the pith-bark and base-top direction, from three municipalities in southern Minas Gerais state (Campo Belo, Cana Verde e Santo Antônio do Amparo). For the determination of basic wood density the standard NBR 11941-02 (ABNT, 2003) was used. It is concluded that: a) the mean basic density obtained was 0.304 g / cm ³; b) there was no significant difference for the mean basic density in the three areas studied; however the location affects the pattern of variation of density in the pith-bark and base-top direction; c) in the pith-bark direction, there was a significant difference only for Campo Belo and Santo Antônio do Amparo: in both cases density increased from pith to bark; and d ) in base-top direction, there was a significant difference only for Cana Verde, with density increasing with height.
