Abstract: Food and Nutritional Insecurity is characterized by the difficulty or interruption in access to quality food and in sufficient quantity by populations, groups, families or individuals, violating the human right to adequate food. Several factors contribute to this condition, among them the difficulty of access to land and food production. In Brazil, there are millions of people who do not have access to food of sufficient quality and quantity, and the rural area is most affected by this condition. Based on this scenario, the present research sought to identify and understand the causes of the food insecurity / security process in the southern region of Minas Gerais. The comparative case study method was used in 4 rural communities in the municipality of Nepomuceno. Through interviews, documentary analysis, non-participant observation and the application of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), the aim was to interpret the way in which families use land for food production, for self consumption and, as th ey perceive their Everyday food. As preliminary results, it was observed that a large part of the interviewees (80%) produce food for consumption, but there is not great diversity in the food grown in the gardens, which may reflect in poor quality of food of these families. Regarding Food Insecurity evaluated through the EBIA, 30% of the families interviewed are in this situation, but without understanding that they are effectively living in a situation of risk.
