Abstract: Environmental management of industrial solid waste (ISW) and building waste (BW) in Brazil and its states is not properly characterized due to the lack of data on generation, standardization of information obtained by the control system and conference of the statements made by solid residue generators and managers. The precarious characterization of the management of ISW and BW, in addition to the incorporation of steel residue into ceramic artifacts, an alternative for disposal, indicates the irregular allocation of ISW and a lapse in management regarding BW built with steel fly ash. Inadequate management concerning the National Solid Waste Policy maximizes potential environmental damage caused by steel activities. In this context, the research aimed to analyze the management of ISW in the steel industry and BW containing steel ISW in the State of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Samples were collected from fly ash obtained in gas treatment systems of blast furnaces in three steel companies in Divinópolis - MG, using charcoal as a heat source. The samples were subjected to leaching and solubilization tests to evaluate the concentration of trace elements in the extracts obtained in accordance with the norms of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), in order to characterize the ISW and analyze the applied management. The results indicates that the residue is characterized as hazardous due to its toxicity and its current management in the State of MG is environmentally inadequate.
