Resumo: Agriculture is the largest consumer of water in Brazil, consuming about 70% of the total water available for use. Given that water is a nonrenewable natural resource is necessary to develop studies that optimize its use. Culture of pepper some studies have been conducted, however, more information on irrigation management of pepper are needed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of different soil water tensions applied in two phenological stages of Cayenne pepper, grown in greenhouse and check which phase is more sensitive to water deficit. The study consisted of a randomized design, using four water tension in the soil (20, 40, 60 and 120 kPa) as treatments and four replications in two different stages of crop development (vegetative and reproductive). Fruit number and average fruit weight were evaluated production. Crop yield showed inversely proportional to soil water tension behavior, observed a lower value for the tension of 120 kPa. According to Ky coefficients found: 0.8003 to 0.9171 and the vegetative stage to the reproductive phase, it is stated that the reproductive stage was more sensitive to water deficit.
