Resumo: To mitigate environmental impacts intensified by human activities, various initiatives are taken to rehabilitate degraded areas. The restoration of riparian forests is necessary because they play essential environmental functions for maintenance of water quality and biodiversity. Studies of ecological groups consider the relationship of species and their adaptations to environmental conditions, assisting management practices and conservation. This research identified potential species for restoration of riparian forest in the upper Grande river, Minas Gerais, in three ecological characteristics, soil moisture, soil fertility and growth rate. The percentage of species occurring was calculated in three riparian areas (alluvial, slope regeneration and slope conserved) according to their ecological characteristics. 42 species belonging to 15 families were characterized. To recompose similar areas are indicated species: alluvial - Acacia polyphylla, Aegiphila obducta, Aspidosperma parvifolium, Casearia sylvestris; slope regeneration - Aegiphila fluminensis, Aegiphila obducta, Aspidosperma parvifolium; slope conserved -Annona cacans, Aspidosperma parvifolium, Byrsonima stipulacea, Cabralea canjerana. These species occupy mesic to wet environments, soil fertility from average to poor, and the species listed for the areas alluvial and slope regeneration grow fast, and species occurring on the slope conserved have moderate growth.
