Abstract: The vegetative development of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. cultivated in substrates based of royal fern fiber (Osmunda regalis L.) it was evaluated. The orchid plants were cultivated in polyethylene vases, staying in greenhouse conditions with 50% shaded. The used substrates were: xaxim fibered (control); royal fern; xaxim + royal fern (3:1 v/v); xaxim + royal fern (1:1v/v) and royal fern + xaxim (3:1 v/v). After four months of the installation of the experiment, they were appraised the following variables: survival rate, shoot length, pseudobulb diameter, number of sprouts and number of leaves. The fiber of royal fern did not affect the survival of the plants and may represent a promising alternative as a substrate to the growing of D. nobile.
