Abstract: The Mucuri River is an independent drainage in the east coast of Brazil. At least 61 fish species can be found in the basin, including six freshwater migratory characins, seven exotic and eight marine fish. The last ones were formerly registered up to 150 upstream from the river mouth in the Atlantic ocean. Impoundments, siltation and sewage can be censidered the main source of impacts on the fish fauna. The water quality improvement and the proper operation of fish passage facilities can be consider the main programs to restore and protect the local fish fauna populations in the basin.
