Abstract: In this work an industrial waste (R1), rich in ZnO, was characterized by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and X-ray diffraction and used as a photocatalyst for the degradation the remazol black (RB) dye. The characterization results showed that the main phases present in R1 are: ZnO (46.2%), MgO (41.4%), Fe2O3 (6.4%) and SiO2 (3.6%). Photocatalytic reactions performed with different pH (2, 6 and 10) and R1 amounts (15-240 mg) showed that the reactions have zero pseudoorder kinetics and the reaction rate increased with the catalytic mass and the pH. The best result, obtained with 240 mg of R1 and pH 10, showed 94% discoloration of RB. These results confirmed the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO present in the R1. In this way, this residue has added value and high potential for application in photocatalytic processes.
