Resumo: Characterized by the progressive loss of kidney function, chronic kidney disease (CKD) decreases the body's ability to eliminate soluble waste, resulting in the accumulation of “uremic toxins” in the target organ and other parts of the patient's body. Currently, science has shown that in addition to the conventional treatments already used, other treatment modalities have resulted in the return of the disease, for example, the use of functional foods such as cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon), garlic (Allium sativum), olive oil (Oleaeuropaea L.) and saffron (Curcuma longa). Many functional nutrients have selective anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-microbial action (against human pathogenic strains), in addition to strengthening the immune system, and can play an important role in the prevention of various diseases, as well as in treatment, be it adjuvant or substituent. In this context, Curcuma longa, popularly called saffron, stands out for its wide culinary application and for its chemical composition rich in secondary metabolites that mainly have antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Therefore, the objective of this work was to gather scientific bibliographic contents that support the consumption and / or supplementation of Curcuma longa, as a nutritional strategy to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in CKD, with an adjunct function to conventional treatments, aiming at its action in remission disease and reduction of associated symptoms. After analyzing the results obtained, it was possible to identify strong evidence on the efficiency of Curcuma longa in preventing or treating chronic non-communicable diseases, including chronic kidney disease. This therapeutic property comes from the components of the plant, which act with mechanisms of restoration and fight the progression of CKD.
