Abstract: Biofuels, especially biodiesel and ethanol, are alternative renewable fuels to replace petroleum products. In the global context, Brazil has comparative advantages because of its potential for large area production, because it is located in a tropical region, and because the country has expertise in ethanol production. This work aims to systematize information on the production chain of biofuels, on the raw materials and on agroindustrial processes, aims to discuss the production models and technologies, such as the use of waste and cogeneration of power; review methodologies such as life cycle analysis, energy balance and emissions balance, and aims to address the policies of clean development and other subsidies. In addition, the work aims to point projected expansion of production of both biodiesel and first generation ethanol and current expectations about the second generation fuels and provide relevant information to the sustainable development of the sector.
