Abstract: Wood is of fundamental importance in the construction sector due to its use for structural purposes. Several works have been developed in order to improve its applicability considering the exemption of defects. Among the various imperfections, the presence of knots has been studied and standards applied, making them apt for structural use. For wood characterization, non-destructive tests are used, which are important tools in the characterization of materials. Among them are ultrasound, radiography, acoustic and vibration analysis. In this study, the application of an optical and non-destructive technique called PIV is proposed to understand the behavior of Pinus taeda wood when subjected to loads in static bending tests. A Universal Testing Machine (conventional assay) and the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method (conventional assay) were used. From the results it was observed that the PIV technique can be applied to measure displacements and deformations in woods. This technique proved to be an effective tool in predicting ruptures. Using the proposed technique it was possible to observe its potential application in various structural engineering fields.
