Abstract: This dissertation is dedicated to investigating the extent to which biography as a creative text and text anchored in verifiable facts in real life can propose the recovery of the memory of a time that cannot be forgotten in Brazil: the dark past of the military dictatorship. Biography is a form of appropriation of the testimony of former political prisoners; on the other, we will discuss how this appropriation via biography also tends to fictionalize these facts and memory. The natures of the biographical and the literary were studied from the works “Em nome dos pais” and “A vida quer é coragem”, fostering discussions about the relationship between reality and fiction; the concept of fiction thought from the perspective of the biographical genre; the reception of the biographical text in addition to a reading that adheres to reality and the contributions and limits of the biographical text as documentary testimony. Based on the concept that “biography is a true novel”, as stated by François Dosse (2015), the work resumes reflection on the literary field and its fictional nature, discussed by several authors, from different theoretical currents, who dedicated themselves to understand the specific nature of literary language and the boundaries between literature and other textual genres. In this way, we try to think to what extent the imagination and the transgression of the real are implicated in a genre that is based on verifiable facts in the real, the biographical, and to what extent this genre functions as the place of a memory needs to be preserved.
