Resumo: Maternal nutrition during both the pregnancy and the neonatal period have a long term impact on metabolism. Studies show that maternal supplementation with omega-3 is effective in the prevention and treatment of pathologies. This work investigated the possible benefits as well as the best dosage for maternal supplementation with chia oil in model postnatal overnutrition (ON) in male Balb/c mice. Female mice were supplemented from the mating period to the weaning of the offspring with chia oil (OC), with dosages of 2.5 and 5g/kg of body weight/day. After the birth of the pups, the litters were readjusted to 3-4 pups, forming the experimental groups: ON 2.5 and 5, ON without supplementation, and the control group (C)(no readjusted). The group ON 2.5 exhibited at 70 and 120 days of life, higher body weight when compared to the C and ON groups. The fasting blood glucose of the group also was the highest among all the groups analyzed, and higher hepatic triglycerides levels than the C and ON groups. The glycemic of 120 days curve showed the ON group with higher glucose concentrations at 30min when compared to to groups C and ON 5, at 60min in relation to groups ON 2.5 and ON 5. The area under the curve exhibited the difference between groups ON and ON 5. The lipid profile of the liver showed that the concentration of total lipids of the ON 5 group were smaller than those in the ON group. The maternal supplementation dosage of 5g/Kg presents more promising results. More research is needed to show what are the effects of maternal supplementation with CO in overfed offspring.
