Description: Abstract: Litter plays an important role in forest ecosystems, composing an inherent part of nutrient cycling and as a source for soil organic matter. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify litter and nutrient return in a hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis plantation throughout one year and to evaluate the response of litter production in relation to climatic variables. For this purpose, six plots (30 x 30 m; 100 trees/plot) were allocated in a commercial stand of the hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis (9.6 ha; planting space at 3.0 x 3.0 m), located in the municipality from Aracruz – ES. In each plot, five litter traps were distributed, being emptied monthly for one year (June 2014 to May 2015), when the stand was 27 and 38 months old, respectively. The litter was hand-sorted into fractions: leaves+miscellaneous and branches. Litter production showed monthly variation with a total deposition of 4797.17 kg ha-1 year-1, being predominantly composed of the leaves/miscellaneous fraction (73 %), which was also responsible for most of the nutrient return (82 %). Macronutrient use efficiency was evidenced by the following order P > S > Mg > K > Ca > N. It was found that none of the climatic elements in the same month of collection significantly influenced the total deposition and the leaf+miscellanea fraction. However, there was a correlation for the branches fraction, with a negative effect for minimum air humidity and a positive effect for solar radiation.
