Abstract: The FMD is a contagious infectious disease produced by seven types of viruses, known as A, O, C, ASIA-1, SAT-1, SAT-2 and SAT-3. A disease caused by a virus family Picornaviridae, gender Aphtovirus is very contagious and affects cloven course domestic and wild. This study aimed to analyze the average rate of immunization coverage of FMD in wild cattle and buffaloes in the rugged region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in the period from 2006 to 2007, aiming to check the critical conscience of society on the procedures related to health importance of vaccination against FMD. The search was conducted with data from the Institute of Defense and Agriculture Inspection of Rio Grande do Norte - IDIARN. It was found that the rate of vaccination in cattle and buffalo herds against foot and mouth disease in the region increased progressively in the period from 2006 to 2007, and the rate of immunization coverage was deemed satisfactory (above 80%), since the state of Rio Grande do North is in a zone of medium risk. The social and cultural aspects discusses are associated with this overview of the eradication of FMD in the region.
