Abstract: The adrenergic β-blockers are an important class of drugs. In dogs and cats its main indications are for control of tachyarrhythmias and hypertension. The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrocardiographic effect of selective β-blocker Metoprolol dogs with sinus tachycardia induced by ketamine. Seven dogs were used without gender, age, size or race restriction, all in the right recumbency. To induce sinus tachycardia was used 10 mg/kg- IV of ketamine hydrochloride. Subsequently, we used 1.2 mg/kg- IV of Metoprolol Tartrate. Electrocardiogram recordings were performed with non-sedated animals (Normal Group) in anesthetized (Ketamine group) and under the effect of metoprolol (Metoprolol group). The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey, p<0.05. The results showed significant variations in heart rate and a downward trend in the ST segment. The other variables showed no noteworthy variations. It can be concluded that the Metoprolol was effective in temporary control of tachycardia in dogs anesthetized with ketamine and tended to a reduction in tissue hypoxia by ketamine. Through this study, it is believed that the use of Metoprolol can be implemented routinely in cases of anesthetic protocols that induce tachycardia by Ketamine effect.
