Cadornega em três tempos: a história geral das guerras angolanas e suas releituras na revista Diogo Cão e no romance A gloriosa família

Abstract

The present work is based on the analysis of three cultural objects: the História Geral das Guerras Angolanas (1681), by António de Oliveira de Cadornega, the Revista Diogo Cão (1931-1938) and the novel A Gloriosa Família: o tempo dos flamengos (1997), by the Angolan writer Pepetela. A chapter will be dedicated to dealing specifically with each of these objects. Therefore, firstly, the História Geral das Guerras Angolanas will be analyzed from its own production context, considering the characteristics of the historical genre in Europe of the first modernity and the traditions of Central-West Africa that are present in the work. Next, the analysis will focus on the Revista Diogo Cão, focusing on the historicist and colonialist reading that it presents of Cadornega's work. The last chapter, finally, will aim to understand how Pepetela, in A Gloriosa Família, performs a rereading of the História Geral das Guerras Angolanas in contrast to the historicist and colonialist perspectives found in the Revista Diogo Cão. Thus, it is intended to demonstrate that modernity has changed over the centuries and decades that separate the objects of this work, which led to the emergence of new concepts that sought to translate historical reality from perspectives that are not politically neutral, but that are part of the disputes and political clashes of each historical period.
