Abstract: Due to a globalized world marked by digital technologies, the text on the screen takes on a multimodal format, and the relationship between the reader and the text (on the screen) has transformed. As a result, reading in a digital environment has gained attention in academic research, especially digital storytelling applications for children, which were chosen as the subject of investigation in this study. Therefore, this study aimed to explore reading in a digital environment for children, with an emphasis on the multimodality found in applications, using the "Crianceiras" app for a more in-depth examination of multimodality and its collection of poems by Manoel de Barros. The research investigates how multimodality influences the digital reading experience for children, particularly in the interaction between text, images, and other multimedia elements present in applications. The theoretical framework for this research draws on the concept of reading proposed by Martins (2004), Koch and Elias (2008), Goulemot (2001) regarding reading as meaning-making; Cosson (2007) and Paulino (2009) on literary literacy; Soares (2002), Ribeiro (2008), Coscarelli and Ribeiro (2010) on digital literacy and digital technology, and Kress (2003; 2010), Rojo (2012; 2019) on studies of textual multimodality. The methodology employed a qualitative and exploratory bibliographic approach. Various sources, such as academic materials, websites, and online platforms, were used to support the discussions throughout this study. A survey was conducted on the discussions regarding digital literature for children and the available free digital applications targeted at the younger audience. Among these, the "Crianceiras - Poems by Manoel de Barros" app was selected to analyze the multimodality present in the poems. Through the analysis, it was possible to perceive that the literariness of the poems, as well as the multimodality that digital genres can present in the combination of poetic writing, musicality, and illustration, facilitate an attractive closeness between the reader and the text. This aims to capture the attention of young readers, stimulating children through reading and writing practices to make discoveries about how the reading process unfolds. As an educational outcome of this research, part of the Professional Master's in Education program, an article on preserving the reading habit based on the Kindle proposal was developed.
