Abstract: In this dissertation, we seek to investigate the phenomenon of referencing in the textualization process and in the construction of meanings in a video animation composed mainly of visual resources. To this end, we use the articulation between two theoretical/methodological perspectives: Textual Linguistics (TL) and Visual Design Grammar (GDV). This articulation intends to encompass the assumptions of studies in the field of TL, which deepens discussions about referential processes, as well as contemplating the contributions of GDV, which covers the ways of organizing visual productions. With regard to referencing, we established an analysis based on Cavalcante and Brito (2021), CustódioFilho (2011), Cavalcante, Rodrigues and Ciula (2021); Carvalho (2012); Cavalcante, CustódioFilho and Brito (2014); and Mondada and Dubois (2003 [2021]). In this context, the two intrinsic functions of referential processes were considered: presentation and recategorization. Furthermore, we also adopted the Grammar of Visual Design as a basis for analysis, as it is a theoretical-methodological framework for the systematic investigation of visual productions, thus helping to ensure that analyzes and interpretations do not become too subjective and intuitive. To do so, we are guided by Hodge and Kress (1988); Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996 [2006]); Gualberto and Pimenta (2019); and Gualberto and Kress (2019). To exemplify the occurrences of references and the effects of meanings raised by the choices made by text producers, we selected the video animation Solitude (2021), produced by CastanhaFilmes and Jubarte Audiovisual. From the results obtained, it was possible to verify the relevance of the different semiotic dimensions for the process of introduction and resumption of referents, as well as for the construction of meanings of the analyzed text, whether from the perspective of the choices made by the producers, or from the perspective of clues left by them for the construction of the project to say. In the specific case of the video animation analyzed, the different semiotic resources (colors, facial expressions, gestures, postures, looks, lighting, clothing, images of the represented participants) contribute to the construction of referents and indicate meanings.
