Resumo: The difficulty of achieving the linguistic norm and the degree of formality required by writing assessments such as Enem reveals the linguistic insecurity of many Brazilian students. This insecurity materializes in their productions through resources such as the exaggerated application of rules —hypercorrection. In this sense, the aim of this study was to qualitatively analyze and describe the hypercorrected uses in Enem model essays produced by candidates for the exam and corrected by professionals from the UOL Educação website. To do this, we analyzed 80 essays from the site, catalogued the hypercorrected uses identified, highlighting the type and (non)correction by the professional and, finally, described each of the cases based on discussions of Sociolinguistics, based on Bagno (2021), Bortone and Alves (2014) and Calvet (2002), observing the catalysts that influence the cases identified —the rules of the standard norm and the writers' insufficient mastery of the rules and conventions that govern formal written Portuguese. Given the results, we found that hypercorrection is a phenomenon present in the texts of student candidates for the exam, and is mostly identified and corrected by language professionals. However, as an indication of linguistic insecurity, it represents a latent issue in Portuguese teaching.
