Abstract: There is a lack of information regarding herbicide tolerance of commercial sugarcane cultivars which are launched by breeding programs. These information can provide great savings for producers as reduction of environmental impacts and the amount of herbicide utilization. There are morphological, physiological and biochemical proprieties differences among sugarcane cultivars and by reason of they have different levels of herbicide tolerance. It is known that the biochemical mode of action of glyphosate in a plant metabolic pathway is called mechanism of shikimic acid and the effective methodology for rapid and specific detection and quantification of shikimic acid in plant tissue has many advantages as it is a colorimetric test which can be clearly observed and qualitatively assessed. Therefore, the results of this study show that this assay can be used to determine sensitivity and tolerance of plants to glyphosate.
