Were evaluated effects of slow and fast drying associated with thermal stress (cold and heat), water and exogenous application of ABA in primed seeds of melon (Cucumis melon L cv. Hales Best Jumbo) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Gaucho Improved .). This work consists of two tests. In the first, melon seeds were primed in a solution of KNO3 (0.35 M), potential of -1.7 MPa, temperature 25 ° C in the dark, with constant aeration for a period of six days. After the seeds were treated without drying, slow drying, fast drying, cold shock + slow drying, cold shock + fast drying, heat shock + slow drying, heat shock + fast drying, PEG slow + drying, PEG + fast drying, ABA + slow drying and ABA + fast drying. To use the control unprimed seeds. The effects of treatments on germination and seedling, IVG, IVE, activity of the antioxidant system (SOD, CAT and APX), H2O2 concentration and concentration of heat-resistant proteins were evaluated. We also evaluated the viability of the seeds through the accelerated aging test. In the second trial were primed tomato seeds in a solution of KNO3 (0.30 M), potential of -1.48 MPa, the temperature at 20 ° C in the dark, with constant aeration for a period of seven days. After the seeds were subjected to the same treatments and evaluations which melon seeds. The completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates for each treatment. The statistical analyzes were Scott-Knott test, Pearson Correlation and Principal Component Analysis by R. Melon seeds without drying and slow drying + ABA had a reduction in germination percentage when compared with control. While the seeds of heat stress and drying retained their viability. Catalase activity was reduced and the heat-resistant protein concentration was higher in these seeds. The seeds of tomatoes ABA + slow drying had reduced the percentage of germination, while slow drying benefited viability. Catalase and APX activity was not detected in tomato seeds, with a reduction of heat-resistant protein. Action in conjunction with a stress is beneficial to dry melon seeds, but have no effect on tomato seeds.
